No lines, no waiting. – you're invited to a virtual book party

That's right. Virtual party, real book (by Greater IBMer Debbe Kennedy: Putting our differences to work). And you're invited to the July 18th festivities in the virtual reality of Second Life.

When's the party? The 2-hour virtual book party starts at 9 am (US Eastern -4 GMT) July 18th, and all Greater iBMers are invited
How do I get there? Join us at the Greater IBM Connection Pavillion on Second Life. The URL is http://slurl.com/secondlife/ibm 7/99/132/24/
New to Second Life? On July 3rd, you can attend a virtual training session. That's also a good time to confirm that you have the Second Life software installed so that you aren't late to the July 18th party. You'll find details on joining the training session at the end of this article.

If you're new to Second Life, we'll have experienced guides to help you find your way around.

Second Life is a virtual world where every member can create a personalized virtual character, called an "avatar". With your avatar you can move through this virtual world, interact with other avatars and even have food and drinks.

We're throwing the party to celebrate the launch of Debbe Kennedy's latest book, Putting our differences to work. In her book, Debbe highlights the networking potential of The Greater IBM Connection. This virtual book party is a great chance to gather people from all over the world and of all ages to talk about cultural differences and how they affect our work life. Plan to be there!

Instructions to install Second Life. Please plan ahead so that you have this installed before the training session on July 3rd.
(Note: this might take up to half an hour on some computers):

  1. To come prepared to the training session and party, please download Second Life at this link: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php
  2. After you download the file, please open it and follow the instructions.
  3. Open Second Life and create an account.
  4. Then you can either start exploring the virtual world, or just wait for the call. We'll explain everything you need to know to become a citizen of this new world!

Instructions for joining the July 18th Book Party on Second Life:

  1. Follow this link (it is necessary to have Second Life installed – read the instructions above) http://slurl.com/secondlife/IBM 7/99/132/24/.
  2. Click "Visit Location".
  3. Allow Windows to open Second Life.
  4. Once Second Life has launched type in the password you created and click "connect".

For Second Life "New Comers" - a training session on July 3rd

New to Second Life? Not to worry. We have you covered with a special "How to" session that will be held on July 3rd (details will be in the events section of www.greateribm.com). This is your chance to experience first hand a cyberspace world that technologists predict will be in all our futures.

Instructions to install Second Life:

  1. To come prepared to this learning session, please download Second Life at this link: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php
  2. After you have downloaded the file, please open it and follow the instructions.
  3. Open Second Life and create an account.
  4. Then you can either start exploring the virtual world, or just wait for the call where we will explain to you everything you need to know!

Joining the July 3rd training session in Second Life (online AND via audio conference)

  1. Follow this link (after you have installed Second Life - read the instructions above)
    2. http://slurl.com/secondlife/IBM 7/99/132/24/
  2. Click "Visit Location"
  3. Allow Windows to open Second Life
  4. Once Second Life launches, type in your password and click "connect".

Important, you'll also need to join the training session audio conference
