IBM Japan took top honors in the fifth
annual Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc.
environmental survey of
manufacturers. The Nihon Keizai
Shimbun, or "Nikkei," is Japan's
equivalent of the Wall Street Journal.
Nikkei has been ranking Japan's
manufacturers on the basis of environmental performance for the past
five years, and their award is one of the most prestigious awards for
corporate environmental efforts in Japan. Ricoh Co. had received the top
ranking for the past three years, and IBM Japan displaced Ricoh this year,
ranking number one out of 820 corporations considered for the award in
Japan. The award is based on 8 evaluation categories, and IBM had the
top ranking in the five of those areas: Environmental management
organization, environmental disclosure, environmental education and
social contribution, waste management and energy management.
