format Web feeds, which communicate news and updates of episodic
information on Web sites. Learn more about this standard designed as a
refinement of RSS formats.
RFC 4287:
The Atom Syndication Format 1.0
[IETF RFC] (sometimes called The Atom
Syntax) is the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard for
Web feeds, which communicate updates of episodic information on Web
sites. The Web has always included sites that present series of
articles, events, and other postings that are meant to be shared and
cross-referenced, and increasingly large parts of the Web are becoming
conversational communities. Atom is intended as a replacement for a
series of similar formats under the moniker of
RSS
. There are many extensions to the Atom syntax to
handle matters that the working group decided were not required in the
main specification. This design for extensibility keeps Atom simple
without stunting its power.
