WebSphere Virtual Enterprise Version 6.1.1

Managing the WebSphere Virtual Enterprise environment

You can configure additional functions to enhance the autonomic functions of the application infrastructure virtualization environment. These functions include maintenance mode, health management, centralized installation manager, high availability deployment manager, repository checkpoints, and autonomic managers.

Before you begin

Configure the on demand router (ODR), servers, dynamic clusters, applications, and service policies.

About this task

After you set up your basic hosting environment with application server virtualization, you can tune the behavior of the managers that make decisions in your environment. You can also configure several features to help with administration.

Procedure

  • Set maintenance mode on your nodes and servers to perform diagnostic tests, maintenance, or tuning on a node or server without fear of disrupting incoming traffic to that node or server in a production environment. See Setting maintenance mode for more information.
  • Configure health management. With health management, the health controller monitors health policies, which contain conditions to look for in the environment, and actions to take when these conditions are not met. See Configuring health management for more information.
  • Use the centralized installation manager to shorten the number of steps that are required to create and manage your environments. See Using the centralized installation manager to manage your environment for more information.
  • The high availability (HA) deployment manager function can be configured to eliminate the deployment manager as a single point of failure for administrative functions in a Network Deployment cell. See Configuring a high availability deployment manager environment for more information.
  • Configure repository checkpoints to save images of the repository before configuration changes are made. You can use these images to restore the configuration repository back to a prior state. See Configuring a checkpoint for more information.
  • You can tune the behavior of the autonomic managers that make decisions for the environment, including the health controller, autonomic request flow manager, and the application placement controller. See Configuring the autonomic managers for more information.

What to do next

Monitor the operations of your environment.
