WebSphere Virtual Enterprise Version 6.1.1

Deploying application editions without loss of service

The application edition manager for WebSphere Extended Deployment manages interruption-free production application deployments. Interruption-free deployment prevents loss of service when you install an application update in your environment. You can also use the application edition manager if you are using the Compute Grid component and want to rollout Compute Grid applications. These are Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications that conform to one of the grid programming models.

Before you begin

Ensure that WebSphere Extended Deployment is installed and up to current levels.

If you are a user with either a monitor or an operator role, you can only view the edition manager information. If you have the role of configurator or administrator, you have all the configuration privileges for the application edition manager.

About this task

Use application editions when you install or update applications. You can perform an upgrade while maintaining application continuous availability.

Procedure

  • Install an edition. To install an edition, you perform the regular steps for installing an application, but specify edition information during the process. See Installing an edition for more information.
  • Activate the application. When an edition is first installed, it is in the inactive state. An inactive edition cannot be started. After you activate the edition, you can start the edition. See Activating an edition for more information.
  • To replace an active edition with a new edition, see Rolling out an edition.
  • To revert to a previous edition, see Backing out an edition.
  • To concurrently host and access multiple application editions residing on multiple deployment targets, see Activating concurrent editions.
  • To test an edition, see Validating an edition.
