What is WebSphere Extended Deployment?
The WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.1 product is divided into three functionally independent and separately priced products. You now have more choices to address your business challenges. In addition to the full product containing all features, you have the option of ordering the following separately chargeable components: Operations Optimization for dynamic operations, Data Grid for high-performance and Compute Grid for running and controlling batch-like jobs.
Operations Optimization - Provides application server virtualization, resource management, and a host of advanced operational facilities, such as performance visualization, health monitoring, and application versioning. This combination of capabilities is sometimes referred to collectively as dynamic operations. New centralized workload management and health policy support has been added for PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) servers and support expanded for other application servers including workload management, application provisioning, health monitoring, and additional administration features. This support enables a more consistent approach to achieving service levels and health policies across a heterogeneous set of application servers. These capabilities are also available if you use Compute Grid with the WebSphere Extended Deployment Operations Optimization package. See the WebSphere Extended Deployment Operations Optimization wiki for more information.
Data Grid - Provides high end caching and transaction partitioning capabilities, known better as ObjectGrid and the partitioning facility (WPF). respectively. ObjectGrid is enhanced to provide performance improvements across a wide range of application scenarios. The number of Java Virtual Machines (JVM) and size of data sets supported is significantly increased, query capabilities have been added allowing for parallel operations across the ObjectGrid configurations, and applications using different schemas for the underlying ObjectGrid information can execute concurrently improving application availability. See the WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid wiki and ObjectGrid wiki documentation for more information.
Compute Grid - Offers flexible support for mixed application types. A new batch-like job referred to as native execution is now supported. WebSphere Extended Deployment workload management technology can support a diverse mix of application types while ensuring service levels are met for priority requests. See the WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid Wiki for more information. Visit the WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid forum for discussions related to the Compute Grid product.
