What is WebSphere Extended Deployment?

The WebSphere Extended Deployment Version 6.1 product is divided into three functionally independent and separately priced products: Virtual Enterprise for dynamic operations, eXtreme Scale for high-performance and Compute Grid for running and controlling batch-like jobs.

WebSphere Virtual Enterprise (formerly known as Operations Optimization)

Provides application server virtualization, resource management, and a host of advanced operational facilities, such as performance visualization, health monitoring, and application versioning. This combination of capabilities is sometimes referred to collectively as dynamic operations. See the WebSphere Virtual Enterprise Wiki for more information.

WebSphere eXtreme Scale (formerly known as Data Grid)

Provides high end caching and transaction partitioning capabilities, known better as ObjectGrid and the partitioning facility (WPF). respectively. ObjectGrid is enhanced to provide performance improvements across a wide range of application scenarios. See the WebSphere eXtreme Scale Wiki and ObjectGrid wiki documentation for more information.

WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid

Offers flexible support for mixed application types. A new batch-like job referred to as native execution is now supported.  WebSphere Extended Deployment workload management technology can support a diverse mix of application types while ensuring service levels are met for priority requests. See the WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid Wiki for more information. Visit the WebSphere Extended Deployment Compute Grid forum for discussions related to the Compute Grid product.
