New England Power Users Group


The New England POWER Users Group will provide a forum for technical discussions and presentations related to AIX and System p hardware. The community will also help AIX and System p professionals throughout New England to network with peers in the region.

Coverage Area - Boston, Worcester, Providence, Manchester, Hartford, Portland

Summary:

Virtualization has provided great value to IT organizations. At the same time, it has introduced complexity and challenges as those organizations attempt to secure, and meet compliance requirements, virtualized environments. To meet these challenges, IBM has introduced the PowerSC solutions to help address these challenges in AIX and PowerVM environments. During the conversation, T.R. will give an overview of the PowerSC including features, functions and the value it can bring to your group.

Thomas (T. R.) Bosworth is the world wide offering manager for IBM Power Systems PowerVM virtualization and PowerSC security and compliance solutions. Thomas joined IBM Global Services in 2007 as the result of IBM's acquisition of Softek Storage Solutions. He has been involved in software development and product management for over 10 years. He has over 25 years of enterprise technical experience with server and storage virtualization working as a sales engineer and manager, selling solutions for a variety of companies including Fujitsu and Amdahl.

Summary:

Jay Kruemcke, AIX Program Director, will be joining us from Austin, TX. He will be discussing the latest AIX 7.1 features, functions, trends and directions. Here's a brief bio:

Jay Kruemcke is currently the AIX Program Director. He manages marketing activities for the AIX operating system as part of the POWER Marketing team. He also assists with sales situations and evangelizes the advantages and future directions of AIX at customer briefings, conferences, and webinars. Jay has held a variety of positions at IBM over the past 20 years including AIX Architecture Development Manager, Tivoli Product Manager, Executive Briefing Center Staff Member, SAP Systems Management Consultant, AIX Product Build Support, and Mainframe System Programmer.

Our speaker for the evening will be Shane Hutchins, one of our members. Shane is the IT Infrastructure Manager at Sappi Fine Paper North America in South Portland, ME. Sappi has been an early adopter of POWER6 based blades. Shane's presentation will be focused on Sappi's experience with JS12 and JS22 blades. Some of the discussion items will include:

-What they chose as the replacements
-Their experience, including Live Partition Mobility, HACMP, Energy Scale and IVM

"What's new in AIX 5.3 and AIX 6.1 Security?" with Jackie Wilson (45 min.) - Jackie is a member of the System p Advanced Technical Support team focused on AIX Security. She will be discussing the new features that were announced with AIX 6.1 including Role Based Access Control, Encrypted File Systems, AIX Security Expert, Trusted Execution, Trusted Execution and the AIX Security certifications. She'll also cover some security features announced with AIX 5.3 that you may have missed like AIX Security Expert, Stack Execution Disable, Secure FTP, IP Filter, IP Security and User Authentication with LDAP.

Tivoli Monitoring on System p with Frederick Gariepy (45 min.) - Rick is a Senior IT Specialist covering Tivoli Business and Automation Solutions for the Upper New York and New England regions. He will be discussing the IBM Tivoli Monitoring System Edition for System p performance tools, which are available with one-year of support for no additional charge on System p. Rick will also discuss the Tivoli portfolio of software available to monitor and manage System p servers.

HMC7/Partition Mobility Demonstration with Jim Vander Poel (45 min.) - He will be giving a demonstration of the recently released HMC7 code. He will also be be demonstrating partition mobility on a new Power6 based p570 in the Innovation Center.

User Virtualization Discussion (10-30 min) - I'm looking for a volunteer(s) to discuss their experiences with virtualization. This might be a good opportunity to discuss your organization's experience in implementing and using Advanced Power Virtualization. I'm happy to help anyone interested in volunteering to work out the format and material with which they are most comfortable.

Group Business (30 min) - We will be transitioning to leadership of the group ! by users after this meeting. If you are interested in helping to lead the group, please attend the meeting or let me know of your interest.
