WebSphere eXtreme Scale is available on its own or as part of a bundle in IBM WebSphere Extended Deployment. You can run WebSphere eXtreme Scale in several application environments, including a WebSphere Application Server environment, a vendor-acquired application server environment, and a stand-alone Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) environment. If you are using a non-IBM JVM then you use need to specify an alternative endorsed directory (see Using a non-IBM JDK or JRE with ObjectGrid).

Installing WebSphere eXtreme Scale

WebSphere eXtreme Scale is included as part of WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid and must be installed with the Data Grid installation program. You can install Data Grid in an installation directory in which WebSphere Application Server is installed. You can also install Data Grid in a separate directory for stand-alone J2SE or vendor-acquired Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application server environments.

For details on how to install Data Grid, see the WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid Version 6.1 Library Page.

Installing maintenance for the product

Service packs and intermediate fixes can be applied only to Data Grid installation directories. If you are using custom environments in which the Java archive (JAR) files for ObjectGrid are manually installed into the application environment, you must first apply service packs and fixes to the Data Grid installation directory. You can then obtain the appropriate JAR files for ObjectGrid from the upgraded Data Grid directory, and manually copy the JAR files into the custom environment. The trial version of the code is always at the latest level and can be just downloaded again when updates are released.

WebSphere eXtreme Scale environments

See Environment for details on the various WebSphere eXtreme Scale application environments that are supported.

Installing the trial version of WebSphere eXtreme Scale 6.1

WebSphere eXtreme Scale Version 6.1 is available as a trial version, which you install differently than the licensed Data Grid product. The trial version of WebSphere eXtreme Scale contains support for standalone J2SE environments only and cannot be upgraded.  As service packs and fixes are released for the ObjectGrid function, the trial download site is also updated with the new download version and current level of service.

To install the trial version, complete the following steps:

  1. Download the trial version of WebSphere Extended Deployment Data Grid Version 6.1 from developerWorks.
  2. Unzip the objectgridtrial610.zip file into a directory on your hard drive.
  3. Read the readme.txt file that is included in the ObjectGrid directory.
  4. There is a gettingstarted folder which contains scripts to quickly start a grid and allow you to perform simple operations against the grid.
