Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 3

The information contained in this page outlines Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 3 specific information on DB2 UDB V8.1.

Validated Platforms

The base kernel level and the base library levels listed here are the default levels provided by the Linux Environment in question. Kernel and library levels that differ from this due to update packages provided by the Linux distributor are also supported.

Platform DB2 Instance Base Kernel Level Libraries Comments

Known Issues and Limitations

This section summarizes some of the issues that were encountered during the DB2 UDB V8.1 validation process and lists any possible solutions.

Please note that some of the workarounds or solutions provided below might require that the DB2 UDB installation be upgraded to a recent fixpack. In order to upgrade to a fixpack, you must have the base DB2 UDB GA version installed before installing the fixpack. It is sufficient to install the fixpack you require; there is no need to install previous fixpacks to the one you need. i.e. if you need FP4, you do not need to install FP1, FP2, FP3 before installing FP4. You do, however, need to install DB2 UDB V8.1.0 (GA). DB2 UDB fixpacks can be obtained from http://www.ibm.com/db2/.

Symptoms Problem Recommended Solution
RHEL 3 U1 + DB2 V8.1.4. Selects involving tablescans may result in a trap file being generated and/or an agent's early termination. Problem was exposed following changes to the address space in RHEL 3. Temporary Solution:
Use db2set DB2_SCATTERED_IO=ON to avoid the problematic code path. (Please note this code path may also result in a performance gain on RHEL 3.)

Permanent Solution:
Upgrade to DB2 UDB FP5 (DB2 V8.1.5)
Problems with characters not being recognized, specifically with applications which use escape characters in the extended ASCII set. Applications on non-UTF-8 environments may experience a problem with RHEL 3 as it is UTF-8-based. The problem is due to a problem with conversions between the different locales. Re-build the application on RHEL3

– OR –

Set the code page that db2 uses internally to the codepage used to build the application. For most Linux Environments (pre RHEL 3) this would have been 819 (db2set DB2CODEPAGE=819).
Segmentation fault occurs when using db2setup to install DB2 on RHEL 3. This is a known problem when using the Java-based db2setup program. The release of Java runtime environment 1.3.1 that is included in the DB2 UDB Version 8.1 install image is not supported for running on RHEL 3. You should use the command line utility db2_install instead of the graphical db2setup utility. Note that db2_install only lays down the DB2 product filesets. It does not create DB2 instances, users, groups, or set up communications, etc. You will need to perform these steps manually or use the db2isetup utility after the product has been installed. Please refer to the RedBook: Up and Running with DB2 for Linux or the appropriate Quick Beginnings product manual for details on how to install and setup using the db2_install utility.
