Overview:
DB2 9 introduced a new feature called pureXML. The pureXML feature enables companies to store XML data in DB2, either alone or side-by-side with relational data.  This provides many benefits to tax authorities that are modeling or plan to model tax forms and filings in XML format.  The XML data can be stored, protected, queried, and analyzed within a database that is optimized for XML, and that coexists with the optimized relational data store. This solution education kit was built based on our success with New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

Target Customers:
Industry: Government. Specifically tax agencies, but can be applicable for other organizations that collect data in forms.
Typical decision sponsors: Executives, CTO, VP IT, IT Architects

Customer Pain Points:
• Tax offices annually process large number of tax forms, many of which change from year to year
• Compliance with shifting tax regulations and federal standards
• Response to legal and form changes in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner
• Eliminate slow paper based processes and improve service levels through automation of data collection and processing
• Managing tax data in traditional relational tables is very difficult, costly to develop, maintain, and execute

Customer value and benefits:
• Simpler data integration and more effective data sharing through a service-oriented architecture using DB2 9 with pureXML support
• Reduced time and effort to adjust to shifting tax regulations and forms, without extensive downtime, through flexible architecture and application design
• Improved data accessibility by tax payers, tax preparers. And government agencies
• Reduce IT management and maintenance costs while cutting processing times for tax returns

Key benefits of DB2 pureXML:
• Faster application development
• Flexible data retrieval and analysis
• Flexibility in managing changes to tax data and schema
• Hybrid data server supporting seamless integration of XML with relational data

Qualifying Questions:
• How are you managing your tax data?
• Are you concerned with the cost and difficulty of managing the ever changing forms and data?
• Do you receive or process tax data in XML format?
• Would you be interested in flexible optimized XML storage?

Education materials:

  • Presentations:

  • Video Demonstrations:   Electronic Tax Filing system based in DB2 pureXML
These demonstrations illustrate how XML documents, based on IRS e-File Form 1120 (corporate tax), can be stored and queried in a DB2 pureXML database in a straightforward way without any data mapping. They show how the XML data can be captured through the following two electronic form options for collecting and presenting form based data:
    • XForms, a W3C XML standard.: XForm Demo
    • IBM Lotus Forms: Lotus Forms Demo
Due to size limit of this site, a complete version of this joint Lotus Forms and DB2 demo can be found at an internal site with link at demo under "NEW: Check out the new Lotus Forms Demo for the IRS 1120 tax form."

The combination of DB2 pureXML and one of these options for form data collection and presentation provides a powerful solution for businesses and government agencies who are automating internal processes to provide better services for their clients.
