Q: What is Crystal Reports?
A: Crystal Reports is a report generation product manufactured by BusinessObjects. (www.businessobjects.com) ClearQuest has been integrated with Crystal so that you can create reports via the ClearQuest user interface and run reports created with Crystal/ClearQuest from the Query/Reports/Chart workspace in ClearQuest.
Crystal Reports may be used either stand alone or integrated through the ClearQuest GUI (web, eclipse, or win32 client). There are two basic components required for developing and viewing reports created using Crystal. First for development (design) of the report you need a Crystal Designer tool. There are several different packages available that include this capability. Second you need a runtime component to view the report. This can include either the runtime (for win32 or eclipse) or web report server component (for CQWeb). Both runtime components are shipped with ClearQuest although the designer tools are not. Designer tools require a separate license. The designer tools can be purchased from Business Objects directly.
There was a point in time where Rational had some sort of licensing issue with Crystal Decisions and no longer made the runtime installable from the Rational install media. (Some of this is really speculation, it was never made clear to my knowledge why the change was made. Bottom line, the runtime did not install from the Rational Media - ed.) The change occurred around version 2003.06.00. of ClearQuest.

A: Depending on the version of ClearQuest that you are running different versions are compatible.
Installing the runtime
Q: I want to install the runtime only for my older ClearQuest Client. How do I do that?
A: You will need to copy in the runtime dll's from the designer version to a couple of specific directories on the hard drive of the client machine where you want to run the reports.
