How to download ISO images of installation CDs for software which is entitled on a Power System server

Please note

  1. Entitled means that the software is covered by a valid software maintenance agreement (SWMA).

  2. Not all entitled software can be downloaded. For example, trial copies of the XL C/C++ Compiler are available for download, so there is no need to download a full installation image of the compiler from Entitled Software Support (ESS). For a list of products available via Entitled Software Support, see the help web page.

  3. Not all levels of entitled software can be downloaded. For example, it is generally possible to download installation media only for those AIX Technology Levels which are still current.

  4. An IBM ID is required and the IBM ID must be used to register for access to one or more customer numbers on the ESS web site. The ESS customer number registration process can take several days.

To download ISO images of installation CDs for a given software product, you will need:

  • An IBM ID. Registering for an IBM ID is quick and easy.
  • The IBM machine type and serial number on which the software is entitled. If you are uncertain of the machine type-model of a server on which AIX is already running in your environment, issue the commands lsconf | head and look for the System Model: and Machine Serial Number: fields.
  • The IBM customer number under which the software was ordered.
  • The IBM order number or system number associated with the software order.

The last two items are available on the paperwork (sometimes referred to as the packing list) included with your software order. If you no longer have the information, your IBM or Business Partner Power Systems sales representative should be able to provide it to you.

Once you have the information above:

  1. Point a browser at the Entitled Software Support (ESS) web site.

  2. Sign in with your IBM ID (see above).

  3. Once logged in, you should see the Register IBM customer number web page.

  4. Enter the customer number and order number or system number (see above).

The first IBM ID to register a given customer number instantly becomes the primary contact for that customer number. If you attempt to register a customer number for which a primary contact has already been assigned, you will be offered the option of sending the primary contact a request to be given access to the customer number. You will not get access until the primary contact responds to that request.

As noted above, the ESS customer number registration process can take several days.

  5. Once the customer number is registered, click on the My entitled software link (on the left side of the web page).

  6. From the My entitled software web page, click the Downloads link (near the bottom of the web page).

  7. Select the customer number (preceded by 892) which was just registered. Then, select the Machine type/Serial number of the hardware on which the software is entitled and click the button.

  8. On the Select product web page which appears, select 5692-A5L     pSeries SPO to download the latest AIX V5.3 Technology Level, the latest VIOS level, etc and click the button.

In addition to 5692-A5L     pSeries SPO, there will be other choices:
    • 5692-A6P     AIX SPO
      • select to download the latest Technology Level for AIX V6.1 (AIX V6.1 TL1 Service Pack 1 as of 9/2008).
    • 5799-HKR     AIX TL Offering
      • select to download other available AIX V5.3 Technology Levels (AIX V5.3 TL6 Service Pack 7 and AIX V5.3 TL7 Service Pack 4 as of 9/2008).
    • 5799-HKS     AIX TL Support for V6
      • select to download other available AIX V6.1 Technology Levels (AIX V6.1 TL0 Service Pack 5 as of 9/2008).

  9. On the Product download package selection web page, check the box to the left of the installation images you want to download and click the button.

  10. On the Terms and conditions web page, click the button.

  11. On the Start download web page, click on the Click here to use HTTP. link (at the bottom of the web page) to download using HTTP or click the button to use the IBM Download Director.

Files are in two different formats. AIX bootable CDs are delivered as ISO image files (suffix .iso). Installation images for other software are delivered as compressed tar archives.

Note

Once an ISO image file has been downloaded, it is not necessary to burn a CD to access the contents of the ISO image. See How to load a .ISO file into a virtual CDROM device on a VIO Server at the VIOS 1.5 level and How to mount a ISO image on AIX V5.3 for more information.

Note

It is possible to order CD and/or DVD media through the ESS web site, rather than (in addition to) downloading ISO files. The following media (among others) is available to order:

  • AIX Base Installation DVD
  • AIX Technology Level Update CD
  • AIX Expansion Pack
  • AIX Toolbox for Linux Applications
  • AIX Toolbox for Linux Source CD
  • Foxfire browser installation CD

Use the Order updates link (on the left side of the ESS web page) to order media.
