Virtualization and VMware

This section covers the concept of virtualization, the products VMware offers, and where to get help using VMware.

For more information about VMware use in the classroom, see the VMware -- General Information page in this Wiki.

About virtualization

Virtual machines provide a separate, isolated computing environment as a computer program on your desktop. The virtual machine itself represents a complete computer system: when you power on the virtual machine, it boots into the operating system that you have installed. In effect, virtual machines allow you to operate two or more computers on a single notebook computer or workstation.

For more information, see VMware's introduction to virtualization.

VMware products

  • VMware Workstation is a development tool used to create virtual machines.
  • VMware Player is a free downloadable application used to run virtual machines created in Workstation. This software is simply for virtual machine users and has no development capabilities.
