Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the leading platform for open source computing. It is sold by subscription, delivers continuous value and is certified by top enterprise hardware and software vendors. From the desktop to the datacenter, Enterprise Linux couples the innovation of open source technology and the stability of a true enterprise-class platform.

The Red Hat Enterprise versions are often based on early work done with the Fedora core offerings.

Certified hardware

Red Hat maintains a database of certified hardware. At the time of this writing, an advance query page allows the user to specify the vendor, the RHEL version, the category (ie: server), and the hardware platform.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Features and Benefits

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 was originally released March 2007 with improved performance and scalability, easier to use security. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 provides the first support for Cell B.E. with the Bladecenter QS21 and Bladecenter QS22 certifications.

The latest update now available is RHEL 5.4, released in September 2009. Besides enhancements in performance and scalability, such as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and OFED Infiniband drivers support, RHEL5.4 improved the virtualization capabilities with the inclusion of the kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) technology, with contribution and support by IBM. When running on Power systems, we recommend at least RHEL 5.2 level.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Features and Benefits

Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.4, released in February 2005, provides significant technology enhancements over the v.3 release. Areas of specific development include improvements in security capabilities, increased server performance and scalability, and enhanced desktop capabilities all while ensuring a high level of compatibility with prior releases. Red Hat Enterprise Linux supports a wide range hardware and software applications, and is the world's leading enterprise-focused Linux environment.

The latest update of this release now available is RHEL 4.8.
