The High Performance On Demand Solutions (HiPODS) team first distinguished itself in
the areas of performance, scalability, capacity planning, and high availability.
HiPODS has evolved to developing innovative, first-of-a-kind solutions to deeply
challenging on demand business issues in such areas as:
Web 2.0 technologies
Collaborative innovation solutions
Cloud computing
Automated IT services management
Capacity planning for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) systems
Software as a service
We know our solutions work, because we use what we sell to manage our own server
farm of 1000+ machines. Case in point -- HiPODS has three people to manage our own
data center!
Our seven global HiPODS labs serve as gateways for clients to tap into the expertise
of IBM's hundreds of software, services, and research labs around the world to bring
to our clients IBM's deep business insights, technology know-how, and vast experience
of simplifying complex IT implementations.
Today, the HiPODS team can create a project team anywhere in the world in minutes,
assign servers and storage for a project in less than an hour, and dynamically install
software components. Most importantly, our talent pools can re-use assets developed
for one client for hundreds of other global clients. This creates a faster path to
innovation for our customers because it allows them to focus on implementing new
technologies. rather than worrying about the infrastructure challenges of their
projects.
Willy Chiu, Vice President, High Performance On Demand Solutions (HiPODS)
Dr. Willy Chiu joined IBM as a research staff member 34 years ago at the Thomas J.
Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY. Recently, Dr. Chiu led one of the top
expert performance and scalability architecture groups with numerous contributions in
high-volume Web performance technologies and client wins, such as eBay, Visa, and NY
Stock Exchange. Before that he pioneered several new emerging areas for IBM, including
IBM's first "digital library" content management project with the
world's most treasured collections, including those at the Vatican Library.
Last year, Dr. Chiu's worldwide HiPODS team, across US, China, UK, Korea, Brazil,
and India, was recognized by Business Week's feature story in August, 2007 as a model
for successful global collaboration, using innovative tools such as Web 2.0 and social
networking. The IBM Innovation Factory developed by his HiPODS team was featured in
the article. This solution was also adopted by the Vietnam Ministry of Science and
Technology, as well as China Telecom's Shanghai Research Institute as the platform to
help drive innovation throughout their communities.
More recently, Dr. Chiu led a team that worked closely with Google™. The two
companies launched a widely publicized joint cloud computing academic initiative.
Subsequent to this work, IBM announced the Blue Cloud project, a leading cloud
computing solution offering based on the joint work with Google. This new solution was
adopted as the platform for the first commercial China Cloud Computing Center for
software companies located in Wuxi, China.
