This page describes the "Electric Green" solution and provides links to more information.
Today, roughly 50 cents of every dollar is spent on energy for computer hardware and costs are expected to continue to rise. Companies are looking for power saving technologies to alleviate rising energy costs. "Electric Green", part of HiPODS request-driven provisioning (RDP) can help.
Provisioning software can reduce power consumption up to 80% simply by putting servers in standby mode when they aren't needed. "Electric Green" can monitor system usage and automatically detect which servers can be placed in standby mode. Deploying this software in all known U.S. data centers would result in an estimated savings of 5.4 billion kilowatts per hour--enough electricity to heat a city of 370,000 homes!
The figure below illustrates how you can save power by identifying under-used servers and switching them to standby mode:
Especially in places like California, where another energy crisis is looming and cost per kilowatt hour is among the highest in the world, it's critical for data center managers to evaluate power-saving technologies.
