Summary:  The first step in the MetroSphere project is to install IBM WebSphere Portal - Express, version 4.1. WebSphere Portal - Express is intended to provide a simple, easy way to get up and running with WebSphere Portal server. This tutorial explains the necessary prerequisites for installing the software and describes the process of getting it installed and working. It also tells you what to do if things don't run quite as smoothly as you'd like them to.

Introduction

Should I take this tutorial?

This tutorial is for system administrators and developers who want to perform a basic install of WebSphere Portal Server Express, but are either unsure of where to start, or who have started and have run into roadblocks not covered by the Troubleshooting instructions in the InfoCenter documentation.

Editor's update: The Web site MetroSphere.com -- the online technical community discussed in this article -- is no longer live. However, the information and screen captures regarding the installation of IBM WebSphere Portal are still accurate and relevant.

What is this tutorial about?

MetroSphere.com is an online technical community and information marketplace built with WebSphere Portal. When it's complete, MetroSphere.com will allow consultants, programmers, and technical writers to gather and share information, tips, and techniques, while at the same time providing a customized portal to information of their choice. MetroSphere.com will be a place where individuals and companies sell and barter technical content and services, as well as enable better collaboration and workflow on new and existing projects. In this series of articles, tutorials, and tips from Studio B, the development team shares their experiences as they build the MetroSphere portal.

The first step in the MetroSphere Express project is, of course, to get the software installed so we can start working with it. While waiting for the main server to arrive, we decided to install Portal - Express on a spare server to get a feel for how the software works.

This tutorial explains the necessary hardware and software prerequisites for installing WebSphere Portal Server - Express, and then explains the information necessary for a Quick Install and describes how that process should work. It also looks at some of the additional information necessary for a Standard Install.

It then explains some of the things that can (and did) go wrong, and how we recovered from them, including the process necessary for installing some of the more common components manually.

Note: This installation doesn't cover the Lotus Collaboration capabilities that can be added with a Standard Install of Express, but everything covered here does apply to such an installation. Similarly, this installation is database-only; LDAP security is not installed.

Tools

In addition to the hardware described in Hardware requirements you will need the following software:

  • IBM WebSphere Portal - Express V4.1
  • Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
  • IBM DB2 Universal Database, Enterprise Edition, version 7.2 with Fixpack 7 or Oracle 8i Release 3 (8.1.7). (We used DB2, and the tutorial concentrates on the information necessary for a DB2-based install.)

Note that you must have the full versions of these products; Express is not designed to work with a downloaded evaluation version of DB2.
