In this tutorial, you will learn how to install and configure IBM® Portal Toolkit Version 4.3 in a distributed setup. The setup shifts the burden of database storage related to the portal installation to a centralized database server. This frees up vital system resources and reduces the required footprint on the portal workstation.

The example configuration uses one or more developer workstations and one shared DB2® server. IBM Portal Toolkit 4.3 is installed on each workstation, and each workstation has its own WebSphere Portal and WebSphere Member Services database residing on the shared machine. DB2 is configured on the workstations to access the databases remotely. With this configuration, the workstation machines need only run the DB2 client instead of a full copy of DB2. This saves approximately 100 MB of RAM and approximately 150 MB of disk space on each developer machine.

This tutorial is intended for readers who want to set up a portlet development environment using a shared DB2 database server. Such a setup results in a smaller memory footprint on the development machines (saving about 100 MB of RAM and 150 MB of hard drive space on each development workstation).

Objectives

  • Build a portlet development environment using a shared database server

  • Add new portlet development workstations and corresponding databases as needed

  • Create a simple portlet to demonstrate that each workstation is using its own independent set of remote databases

Prerequisites

You should have a basic knowledge of how to install Windows software.

System requirements

You will need the following software:

  1. A supported Microsoft Windows platform on each development workstation and the DB2 server
  2. IBM Portal Toolkit V4.3, download available
  3. IBM WebSphere® Portal V4.2 or 4.2.1 installation CDs
  4. WebSphere Studio Application Developer V5
  5. A fixed IP address for each development workstation
