Extended Structured Query Language is a programming language that is used to define and manipulate data within a message flow. This article describes how to use ESQL in WebSphere Business Integration Message Broker to transform the message contents and customize the behavior of message flow nodes.

WebSphere® Business Integration Message Broker (hereafter called Message Broker) uses Extended Structured Query Language (ESQL) to define and manipulate data within a message flow. ESQL is derived from the Standard Query Language (SQL), and like SQL, it has the ability to access and update databases, as well as -- provide extensions particularly suited to manipulating message data structures.

This is Part 3B in a six-part series on Message Broker V5. Part 3A introduced the concept of message flows, broker schemas, and the tools used for creating and building message flow applications. In this article you will see how to use the ESQL language to transform and manipulate the contents of messages. You will learn about tools for building ESQL program modules to customize the behavior of message flow nodes.
