See how to enable two banking portlets to share business data, with minimal programming. WebSphere Portal V5 lets you wire two portlets so they can share data over a persistent connection, using Click-to-Action enabled portlets. You see how to enable and wire source and target portlets.

Description

Wiring, a new feature introduced in IBMR WebSphereR Portal V5, facilitates data transfer over a persistent connection between portlets. When a user holds the CTRL key and clicks on the Click-to-Action (hereafter referred as C2A) enabled icon, a menu option is provided to save the selection as a persistent connection between two portlets; this connection is called a wire. If a wire is present the next time the user clicks on the icon, no selection menu is shown. Instead, the wired actions are automatically fired, which causes the wired portlets to react and display a new view with the results.

This article shows you the quickest approach for creating C2A-enabled portlets for WebSphere Portal Version 5. It provides step-by-step instructions for enabling C2A between portlets and for implementing a wire between the C2A-enabled portlets, with minimal code and configuration. To follow along in the code as you read through this article, you can download the sample application that is provided with this article.
