About this course
This course provides an introduction to WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal (WEMP) Version 5.1. It explains the product offerings and system architecture, MPTK V5.1 and the principal plug-ins, XDIME markup language, and the use of fragments and replicas to distribute content over multiple pages on small format screens. The course also discusses planning, designing, and maintaining mobile portlet applications, and how to diagnose errors and behavior that are unique to MCS and mobile portlets. Finally, students learn how to administer and configure WEMP.

Audience
This course is intended for developers who develop portlet applications that will be delivered to a wide range of pervasive devices and deployed on a WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal V5.1 platform.
Objectives
After completing this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal (WEMP) V5.1
- Describe the Architecture of WEMP and how it augments WebSphere Portal Server
- Provide the list of supported device protocols and markups
- Describe in detail the operational components of the WEMP Architecture and the role of each
- Provide an overview of the functionality of Mobile Portal Toolkit (MPTK)
- Describe the major plug-ins associated with MPTK V5.1
- Demonstrate the augmented Portal Test Environment provided by MPTK V5.1
- Describe the overall approach used to build mobile portlets using XDIME and MCS (runtime).
- Describe how to browse the content layout through layout policies
- Describe the elements used to construct a portlet layout, such as panes, fragments, grids, and forms
- Describe the collection of MCS components that can be used to define device-specific presentation behavior within a portlet, including image, audio, chart, button image, rollover image, dynamic visual, script and test components
- Describe the tooling for building MCS themes to control the look and feel of the portlet on particular devices
- Describe the use of specialized browsers and device emulators for testing
- Configure both Mozilla Firefox and OpenWave SDK browsers
- Describe XDIME markup
- Describe the extensions to XHTML that support pervasive device presentation
- Describe how to design layouts for potentially multi-page display using fragments and replicas
- Describe how to manage the presentation of variable sized data sets
