08 Mar 2004 This tutorial guides you through the necessary steps to build mobile Web services clients on J2ME MIDP devices. By following the steps in this tutorial, you will see how quick and easy it is to create a Web services client. The example built in this tutorial is a stock quote client application. Using the WebSphere Studio Device Developer V5.6 Web Services tooling, you can generate a client stub and a MIDlet that will take a stock symbol as input and retrieve the most current price (time delayed, of course). Finally, it guides you through the steps necessary to run the MIDlet on the Device Developer MIDP emulator.
Prerequisites
None.
System requirements
Web services support for mobile devices is provided as a technology update to Device Developer V5.6. In order to create a Web services client for mobile devices -- and in order to continue with this tutorial -- you need to install Device Developer 5.6, followed by the Web services support update. An evaluation version of Device Developer 5.6 can be downloaded at http://www.ibm.com/software/wireless/wsdd/. The minimum hardware configuration for Device Developer V5.6 is as follows:
- A system suitable for running Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP or Linux Red Hat Pro 8.
- An Intel Pentium III 500 MHz processor or equivalent (1.0 GHz recommended).
- 512 MB RAM (768 MB recommended).
- A display adapter setting of at least 256 colors and 800 by 600 pixel resolution or higher (1024 by 768 pixel resolution recommended).
- 200 MB of free disk space over and above the disk space required by the Device Developer files themselves. During installation, you'll need additional 200 MB of temporary space on the drive specified in your user TMP environment variable.
Development for Palm OS devices requires the Palm emulators and ROMs. You can download them from PalmSource's Web site. Before running a Java platform on a Palm OS or Pocket PC device, you must install the J9 VM on the device. Instructions can be found in the Device Developer help under the WebSphere Studio Device Developer Product Documentation. Refer to Device Developer product documentation, Device Developer Tooling, Runtimes, Palm for J9 or Device Developer product documentation, Device Developer Tooling, Runtimes, Pocket PC for J9.
