Overview

The WebSphere software portfolio includes all the tools needed to write and run industrial-strength web application in an internet-driven world. It provides a proven foundation for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and runs on many platforms including AIX, HP Unix, i5/OS, Linux, Sun Solaris, Windows, and z/OS.


IBM offers its Academic Initiative members an array of resources to help you learn about these products, courseware and teaching tools to help you bring the concepts into the classroom. and software you can make available to your students for labs, workshops, and team projects.

  • For SOA application development: WebSphere Application Server

    WebSphere Application Server is a premier Java Enterprise Edition application server and the SOA runtime. It has the application infrastructure needed for a Service Oriented Architecture and is available in several editions, depending on your needs.

  • For business process management: WebSphere Business Modeler

    WebSphere Business Modeler enables you to fully visualize, comprehend, and document business processes, with the capability to perform simulation and analysis. WebSphere Process Server, based on Service Oriented Architecture, simplifies the integration and automation of enterprise business processes.

  • For dynamic scripting and Web 2.0 mashup development: WebSphere sMash

    WebSphere sMash provides a development and runtime environment that enables agile development of dynamic Web 2.0-based applications using SOA principles. WebSphere sMash gives developers the power to create, assemble, and execute situational composite applications by using dynamic scripting languages PHP and Groovy, and it supports lightweight application assembly and REST-style service invocation. WebSphere sMash is based on Project Zero, the highly acclaimed, community-driven incubator project.

  • For operations research/management science: IBM ILOG Optimization software

    IBM ILOG Optimization software provides integrated tools and engines for optimization modeling and application development. ILOG CPLEX delivers high-performance, robust, flexible optimizers for solving linear, mixed-integer and quadratic programming problems in mission-critical resource allocation applications. ILOG OPL-CPLEX development bundles provide integrated model and application development tools, which enable you to create prototypes and build optimization-based decision support applications.

Sandbox trial environment

  • SOA sandbox: You and your students can "learn through play" about Service Oriented Architecture and get hands-on experience without having to download and install software. The SOA Sandbox offers access to hosted trial sessions comprised of configured and integrated software running on IBM servers.
