Amazon cloud offering

Academic Initiative program

Cloud computing provides a way to access software in a virtual environment without having to install the products on your own system. IBM has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to give faculty and their students access to select IBM software products in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

Overview

This offering provides teaching grants for educators to use select IBM technologies through the Amazon EC2 for education purposes only.

What the grants cover

The IBM technologies are available as Development Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) and include product-level code with all features and options enabled. Access to the IBM Development AMIs is free; the teaching grant covers EC2 usage charges. The grants will provide up to $100 USD in free usage for each student enrolled in a faculty member's degree-earning course at an accredited institution. A valid credit card will be required to obtain the grant; no charges will accrue on the card unless usage of the EC2 exceeds the date of expiration of the grant, or the $100 value in usage charges. Given the nominal fee for EC2 access, $100 will support an extensive period of usage.

Limitations

  • This offering is available to the first 150 Academic Initiative members to apply and be approved for a teaching grant.
  • Requests for grants will be considered only from those members located in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
  • This offering will end at 4:00 PM Eastern Time on December 31, 2009 or when the 150 grants have been awarded, whichever occurs first.
  • IBM and/or AWS reserve the right to approve or reject grant applications at their discretion, and to modify or withdraw this offering at any time.

Other availability

Academic Initiative members who are not among the first 150 approved applicants, or those who are located in countries where this offering is not available, can still access and use the IBM technologies in the Amazon EC2 at a nominal fee, as described in EC2 AMI Frequently Asked Questions about IBM Development AMIs.
