Create your curriculum
The Academic Initiative program offers a variety of course materials to help you get started with IBM i (formerly i5/OS) products and technologies. All of the materials are available to educators to use in a variety of formats, both lecture and labs, and they may be used in whole or in part as appropriate for your purposes.
- IBM i courses: Professionally developed courseware available to Academic Initiative members at no charge.
- Data and Information Management courses: Courses on cross-product DB2 fundamentals and SQL.
- Rational courses: Courses on a wide range of Rational products including the lifecycle of planning, developing, testing and delivering software applications and systems.
- Tivoli courses: Courses on software management and related concepts.
- WebSphere courses: Courses from basic server processing to complex application integration across the enterprise.
- SOA courses: Courses on Service Oriented Architecture concepts.
- IBM Redbooks: Publications produced by IBM International Technical Support Organization (ITSO) that cover skills, technical know-how, and real-world experiences.
- Summer School handouts: Educational presentations from the workshops during our 2009 summer school program in Rochester, MN.
- Other IBM i resources: Includes articles, tutorials, videos, podcasts and more to help you teach IBM i, iSeries, and AS/400 midrange servers.

Lease or purchase IBM Power Systems at a discount*
We offer special discounted lease and purchase options to educational institutions whose faculty are members of the IBM Academic Initiative. Both options feature discounts on the hardware and the IBM operating systems, and additional IBM software is included at no added cost. IBM Academic Initiative members can also download thousands of IBM software products, at no charge.For more information on the lease and purchase options, as well as the software available, refer to these Educational Lease and Purchase Options documents. (Power Systems can run AIX, IBM i and Linux, or any combination of these three operating systems, simultaneously. Choose the document for the operating system you want to configure as your primary system.)

Get remote access to Power Systems
At our Power System Connection Center, IBM Academic Initiative members can get no-charge access to the latest technology for teaching purposes — without the expense of your owning and maintining your own system. The Connection Center is managed by Systems Education Association Limited (SEAL), who will work with you to understand your application requirements, set up your student profiles, as well as handle other administrative responsibilities, so that you can spend your time teaching. When you access the environment using the Power System Connection Center, it will look and feel just like your own system.
You can test the Connection Center environment using the SEAL guest connection. When you link to the SEAL site, follow their directions to access the test environment. Just email us if you need more information!

Inspire your students
Academic Initiative members can request a 50% discount for themselves and their students on some IBM Professional Certification tests at Thompson Prometric Centers. Professional certification automatically qualifies students to post their resumes in the IBM Student Opportunity System. But, you can personally qualify students who have taken a course on IBM or open source technologies. Find out more.
