In the spotlight

The Academic Initiative has many outstanding members, fellow academics and students who have been breaking ground and using IBM products and technologies in innovative ways. Read their stories and let their successes spark your own creative ideas.

Dr. Ron Dattero: A leader in IT Service Management
Dr. Ron Dattero played a key role in the creation of an Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) undergraduate major at Missouri State University, which was the first of its kind in the USA and perhaps in the world. He has continued to lead with other innovations at his school, including the use of serious games in the classroom and the introduction of cloud computing.

Dr. Matthew Nelson: Making business courses come alive
Dr. Matthew Nelson at the College of Business, Illinois State University is ensuring that his students are prepared to succeed in business world. His well-rounded curriculum brings together IBM Cognos Business Intelligence software, web-based learning materials, serious games, group projects, and contact with working professionals. Follow his lead and give your students the same advantages.

Dr. Eitel Lauria: More software to more students through cloud computing
Dr. Eitel Lauria has had a successful career spanning two decades, two continents, and two industries. Because of this broad perspective, he truly understands how important it is to combine in-class learning with practical, hands-on experience. Unfortunately, because the software and tools that are actually used in the industry aren't necessarily easy to install or run, this isn't always an easy thing to do. Find out how Dr. Lauria solved this problem at Marist College using a Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) implementation.

Dr. Praveen Rao: Early adopter of cloud technologies
Dr. Praveen Rao understands that cloud technology will play a significant role in the future of enterprise computing, and he believes it is important to train students with skills relevant to the industry and engage them early. Therefore, it is no surprise that Dr. Rao was one of the first professors to be accepted into the IBM Academic Skills Cloud pilot program and introduce this new environment to the University of Missouri-Kansas City, incorporating an understanding of cloud technologies in his courses and providing his students with hands-on experience.
