Collaborative lifecycle management for application lifecycle management

Basics of the IBM Rational approach

Date:  07 Oct 2011 (Published 12 Jul 2011) |Level: Introductory ||

1. Do this first

Before you begin with this hands-on knowledge path, it is important that you have some understanding of ALM and these five imperatives, which Rational professionals, through their work with hundreds of customers on thousands of projects, have determined to be essential to consistently delivering high-quality applications on time:

1. Real-time planning
2. Lifecycle traceability
3. In-context collaboration
4. Development intelligence
5. Continuous improvement

2. Find out what the Rational solution for CLM offers

Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) integrates the software development lifecycle activities, automates time-consuming and repetitive tasks, and provides tools that promote real-time collaboration among globally dispersed teams, partners, and suppliers. For organizations that want an ALM solution for traditional project teams or agile development teams and also want that solution to use the latest technology, based on the IBM® Rational® Jazz™ platform, we offer the Rational solution for Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM). This alternative makes it easier for your development teams to implement an ALM solution that meets the majority of their needs by adopting proven IBM® agility@scale™ practices. If you need additional capabilities, you can extend CLM with other Rational tools.

3. Plan and prepare for the download

IBM® Rational Team Concert™, Rational® Quality Manager, and Rational® Requirements Composer share a common installer that deploys the shared Jazz Team Server, plus the change and configuration management, quality management, and requirements management applications. The trial licenses that are installed in the Jazz Team Server provide access to the capabilities of all three applications. This means that you can install any of the three to enable the full set of collaborative lifecycle management capabilities provided by all of them. In this knowledge path, you will use is Rational Team Concert to download the full set of collaborative lifecycle management capabilities.

4. For quick-start, smaller deployment

To get started quickly with a small deployment, using the default topology and Derby databases, skip to task 4, Install the server. Derby deployments are limited to 10 users and do not permit cross-domain reports.

5. For advanced deployment

For a more advanced-level deployment, start with these two resources.

6. Install the server and applications

To perform a web installation of the server and early access licenses for Rational Team Concert, Rational Quality Manager, and Rational Requirements Composer, download the web installer for your operating system, decompress the .zip file, and run the appropriate executable file. The server includes Apache Derby for supporting up to 10 users. To enable more than 10 users, install DB2 or another supported database program.

If you need to install the server in an environment without access to the Internet, from the All Downloads page (see the URL), download and decompress the files for the Jazz Team Server and CCM, QM and RM applications repository (configuration and change management, quality management, and requirements management applications), as well as the trial product licenses repository, and install them using the IBM Installation Manager.

Note:
During the installation process, you have the option to install different applications. It is possible to install only a subset of the applications. These options are for advanced installation scenarios, such as distributing the applications across multiple servers or deploying multiple applications of the same type within an application group.

7. Set up the server, and install optional tools

After installation, follow the Jazz Team Server setup wizard (http://example.com/jts/setup, where example.com is the domain for your server). Install the client for either the Eclipse IDE or the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE for developers, the build system toolkit for running Jazz-based builds, and synchronizers for integrating with IBM® Rational® ClearCase® and IBM® Rational® ClearQuest®.

8. Explore CLM capabilities by trying them

For an in-depth exploration of collaborative lifecycle management capabilities, including change and configuration management, quality management, and requirements management, try the sample application, called Money that Matters, which is included in the CLM solution. To help you get started with the application we've produced several scenarios, ranging from a short demo that hits the highlights to a deep dive that goes into role-specific details. Start by working through the Money that Matters Lifecycle Scenario. If you'd like to focus on change and configuration management capabilities, follow the Change and Configuration Management Task Guide.

Note:
Each scenario takes two to three hours to complete.

9. Report a bug or submit a suggestion

The Rational development team uses Rational Team Concert to develop the CLM solution. If you find a bug or have a suggestion for an enhancement, please visit and join the related communities.
