Ein Großrechner (engl.: mainframe) ist ein allumfassendes Computersystem. Es geht sowohl weit über die Einsatzgebiete der Personal Computers als auch über die Möglichkeiten typischer Serversysteme hinaus.
Ein Großrechner zeichnet sich vor allem durch seine Zuverlässigkeit und hohe Ein-Ausgabe-Leistung ab. Im Online-Betrieb (Time Sharing) kann eine große Anzahl von Benutzern bedient, im Batch-Betrieb aber auch komplizierte und aufwändige Aufgaben durchgeführt werden.
In einem Großrechner sind sorgfältig aufeinander abgestimmte, robuste und hochgradig redundante Komponenten verbaut. Üblicherweise wird die Wartung dieser Rechner im laufenden Betrieb durchgeführt, auch Hardwareaustausch und Aufrüstungen führen zu keiner Beeinträchtigung oder gar Unterbrechung des Betriebs.
Anwendungsgebiete
Da ein Großrechner – im Gegensatz zu Supercomputern - auf Zuverlässigkeit und hohen Datendurchsatz ausgelegt ist, wird er in Banken, Versicherungen, großen Unternehmen und in der öffentlichen Verwaltung eingesetzt. Ein sich gerade entwickelndes neues Einsatzgebiet für Großrechner bietet die Konsolidierung von Serverfarmen. Mit einem Großrechner und einem modernen Betriebssystem ist es möglich, viele virtuelle Server zu starten. So können Platz und Strom gespart und die Administration vereinfacht werden.
