Explore Perl, Apache, Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) and SimpleDB
|
 |
Read this five-part series to understand how to use the Perl programming language with cloud services on AWS. Part 1 helps you understand the benefits and drawbacks of using Amazon's S3 and SimpleDB for Web site building. Then in Part 2 see how to upload a file into S3 from a Web page through an HTML form to minimize the load on the server and Part 3 shows how to upload images via a list of URLs in a table and manage images and comments. Part 4 walks through the full site's code base. And the series ends with Part 5 examining the full mod_perl site's templates, including one for indexing, three for uploading (general, S3 forms, and URL additions), one for image and comment browsing, and one to browse comments recursively for an image (or threading down).

I just got back from a week in Toyko. My trip was actually quite the experience, the first time I've gotten the chance to visit Japan. I was there in part to attend CloudCamp Tokyo as well as an action packed week of meetings. Other then 7 days of sushi, which got old pretty fast, I had an amazing time.read more - The Character of Cloud Computing
Here's an important reminder for cloud service providers: character counts.
Ethics, Values, and Trust are table stakes – for anyone who wants to succeed in business long term – but especially for cloud service providers.
As a cloud customer, I am not simply buying/renting your hardware and software. I am grafting my company onto yours. We are intermingling our corporate DNA. I am loading my databases on your disk drives. I am modifying my internal processes to map to your services.read more - Go East for Cloud Computing Expansion
In the story, I also noticed that Amazon also put out a new software development kit for .NET and support for private content in Amazon CloudFront – the company’s content delivery service. This is the kind of support that enables, say, a website that sells digital products, to restrict downloadable merchandise to paying customers.
I like to hear about the development of support services that make companies feel more secure about doing business on the cloud. We have enough examples of security breaches, outages and other cloud snags that make consumers and businesses jittery. And, of course, I think supplemental services for website owners, such as website transaction monitoring and incidence notifications, go a long way to increasing a sense of security.read more - Get Off the Rails and Onto the Cloud
About 10 years ago, a quiet bunch of IT revolutionaries, tired of expensive, complicated operating systems and the resources needed to support them, created a new breed of network management software and network monitoring systems. Pioneers like Solarwinds, Groundwork, Zoho (Adventnet), Hyperic and others offered 80-90% of the services of the big four at only 20% of the cost. They brought network and systems monitoring to the rest of us. These companies are faring well, as I write this. For example, Solarwinds, which recently issued an IPO, according to Gartner, has a market capitalization of $1.5 billion, on sales of $93 million. This is feeding a frenzy of interest by investors and those looking to acquire profit makers – defying the current recession.read more - ILM Was Cloud Computing Buzzword de Jour A Few Years Ago
Disclaimer, warning, be advised, heads up, disclosure, this post is partially for fun so take it that way.
Remember ILM, that is, Information Lifecycle Management among other meanings.
It was a popular buzzword de jour a few years ago similar to how cloud is being tossed around lately, or in the recent past, virtualization, clusters, grids and SOA among others.
One of the challenges with ILM besides its overuse and thus confusion was what it meant, after all was or is it a product, process, paradigm or something else?
That depends of course on who you talk to and their view or definition.
For some, ILM was a new name for archiving, or storage and data tiering, or data management, or hierarchical storage management (HSM) or system managed storage (SMS) and software managed storage (SMS) among others.
So where is ILM today?
Better yet, what does ILM stand for?
Well here are a few thoughts; some are oldies but goodies, some new, some just for fun.
ILM = I Like Marketing or Its a Lot of Marketing or Its a Lot of Money
ILM = It Losts its Meaning or Its a Lot of Meetings
ILM = Information Loves Magnetic media or I Love Magnetic media
ILM = IBM Loves Mainframes or Intel Loves Memory
ILM = Infrastructure Lifecycle Management or iPods/iPhones Like Macintosh
Then there are many other variations of xLM where I is replaced with X (similar to XaaS) where X is any letter you want or need for a particular purpose or message theme. For example, how about replacing X with an A for Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), or a B for Buzzword or Backup Lifecycle Management (BLM), C for Content Lifecycle Management (CLM) and D for Document or Data Lifecycle Management (DLM). There are many others including Hardware Lifecycle Management (HLM), Product or Program Lifecycle Management (PLM) not to mention Server, Storage or Security Lifecycle Management (SLM).
While ILM or xLM specific product and marketing buzz for the most part has subsided, perhaps it is about time to reappear to give current buzzwords such as cloud a bread or rest. After all, ILM and xLM as buzzwords should be well rested after their break at the Buzzword Rest Spa (BRS) perhaps located on someday isle. You know about someday isle dont you? Its that place of dreams, a visionary place to be visited in the future.
There are already signs of the impending rested, rejuvenated and re branded appearance of ILM in the form of automated tiering, intelligent storage and data management, file virtualization, policy managed server and storage among others.
Ok, nuf fun for now, time to get back to work.
Cheers gs

After
posting some thoughts
a month ago about Erving Goffman's classic sociological text, The
Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, I heard from a reader who
urged me to try out a deeper work of Goffman's, Frame
Analysis (Harper Colophon, 1974). This blog presents the thoughts
that came to mind as I made my way through that long and rambling
work. Although the Internet tends to strip away the external
meanings Goffman recorded, we still bring our real-life frameworks
into online interactions.
