Description: The Common Data Model is an information model that provides consistent definitions for resources, business systems and processes, assets, functions, and other data as well as the relationships between those elements. It is based on the unified modeling language (UML) and is designed to work seamlessly with other development efforts based on UML.
To foster integration among products, the Common Data Model is the basis of their data modeling for interactions between products. Because the CDM is an information model, this allows products to maintain their existing database schemas, but when integrating with other products (such as when loading information into the CMDB), CDM definitions and terminology are in use.
Objective: To foster integration among products, the Common Data Model should be used as the basis of their data modeling and interactive design. Because the CDM is an information model, products are able to maintain their existing database schemas and also utilize the Common Data Model. When integrating with other products, CDM definitions and terminology should be in use. This fosters consistent, one-time integration function that is re-usable across multiple solutions.
