Overview
RUP4STP replaces the Business Modeling discipline of the IBM®
Rational Unified Process™ with process guidance specific to the financial
services industry. The workflows guide the activities of project managers, business
systems analysts, and software architects to:
- Organize and prioritize operational and technical initiatives to establish straight through processing (STP)
- Properly define current operational and technical workflows and data flows
- Architect future, optimum workflows and data flows
- Evaluate the return on investment for starting one or more projects to replace, re-architect, or re-engineer systems to support STP
Full description
Straight through processing (STP) is the end-to-end automation of the pre-trade to post-trade settlement process. Investment managers, broker/dealers, clearing agencies, global custodians, and sub-custodians seamlessly share information streamlining the entire trade process. While STP is not part of the initiative to move to next day trade settlements (T+1), T+1 is dependent on STP. Investment management firms that embrace STP will see significant gains in operational efficiencies.
In order to achieve STP, investment managers are challenged to develop, re-architect, or replace workflows and systems in order to:
- Eliminate manual steps in the trading cycle
- Automate interfaces between internal systems
- Connect to external organizations such as virtual matching utilities, custodian banks, and settlement trading partners
- Adopt industry standards for the transfer of data
Consistent data, user communities, and workflow processes are the building blocks of STP. The Business Modeling for Investment Manager Discipline is focused on understanding the current trading environment, identifying weaknesses and impediments to STP, and specifying the vision of the future trading environment. Although the focus is on initial planning, the artifacts produced in this discipline, particularly the Stakeholder Requests, Vision, and Future Trading Model, will serve as a guide to developing the initial architecture, the detail requirements, and other system development activities.
The Business Modeling for Investment Manager Discipline helps organizations to answer the question, "How do we get started in our STP efforts?"
