Software quality assurance teams use IBM® Rational® Service Tester for SOA Quality to validate Web service functionality and performance. This article explores some of the key advancements introduced in Version 8.1.

Service stubbing

The most significant change in the Rational Service Tester V8.1 release is the introduction of the new service stubbing capabilities.

With service stubbing, you can test your service-oriented architecture (SOA) application before the creation of all services. A typical service test integration scenario would involve one virtual test driver for the test on the service under test (or several services, if needed) and one or more service stubs to simulate the service under test dependencies. Figure 1 illustrates this principle.

Stubs are automatically generated from Web Services Description Language (WSDL) files, and they will be automatically deployed before test execution. After the generation of service stubs, you can use the visual editor to modify stub behavior to meet specific testing scenarios (see Figure 2). For example, simulation of error conditions, such as an external service being unavailable or answering with a fault message, are typical uses.

Service stubbing is available for Web services that defined with a WSDL file and using SOAP over HTTP/HTTPS transport protocols.

Environment updated to support more protocols

HTTP Kerberos authentication support

Kerberos is a security authentication protocol that requires users and services to provide proof of identity. With the V8.1 release, you can record and play back tests in environments that use the Kerberos protocol for HTTP

NTLM protocol support enhancement

Starting with the V8.1 release, Rational Service Tester support of the authentication for Microsoft® Windows NT® LAN Manager (NTLM) has been enhanced to work in the context of an HTTP Proxy Server.
