Introduction

This tutorial is an introduction to the IBM® Rational Developer for System z ® Problem Determination Tools; Fault Analyzer (FA), Debug Tool Utilities and Advanced Facilities (DT or DTUAF), and File Manager (FM). The intent is to introduce you to some of the basic features of the tools, and to show how the tools can be used together to leverage their individual features. This tutorial is to be used with our demonstration z/OS® system. It not only gives you an introduction to the tools, but also allows you to create all the files needed to recreate this demonstration. In addition, you will create an environment where you can explore further with the tools.

Although this tutorial contains screen shots, it is not meant to show all of the screens in a step-by-step sequence. The figures selected show significant setup information, or information at key points of the demonstration.

A nominal amount of experience with Multiple Virtual Storage (MVS) concepts like Job Control Language (JCL) and MVS file systems is expected. Basic Eclipse concepts will be introduced.

Throughout this tutorial, if a perspective does not look as shown in the figures, reset the perspective by using the Window menu (Window > Reset Perspective). Depending on your screen resolution, the proportions might be different than shown in this tutorial. You can resize the windows by placing your cursor on the border between two windows (either vertically or horizontally) within the Eclipse application, clicking and dragging the border line.
