This plug-in describes the process of evaluating, recommending, acquiring, installing, configuring, fielding and evolving commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) package solutions.

System requirements

You must have IBM® Rational® Method Composer Version 7.5 installed to use this plug-in.

Purpose

The IBM Rational Unified Process (RUP) for commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Package Delivery plug-in addresses the needs of IBM customers who demand process guidance in their projects in order to evaluate, recommend, acquire, install, configure, field and evolve COTS Package Solutions.

A COTS Package refers to a software product that:

  • is supplied by a vendor
  • is sold, leased, or licensed to an acquirer
  • is used without modification of its code
  • may be tailored to be integrated into the acquirer environment
  • is supported and evolved by the vendor, who retains the intellectual property rights

For instance, a COTS package can be an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) package, a CRM (Customer Relationship Management package), or other commercial-off-the-shelf software that satisfies the previous definition.

A COTS Package Solution is the integrated assembly of one or more:

  • COTS packages or COTS package components
  • legacy systems (piece of the systems being replaced)
  • reuse libraries and other reuse sources (e.g., freeware, shareware)
  • any required custom code (including wrappers and "glue")
  • appropriate linkage to the broader organization's architecture with which the solution must interface
  • changes to the end-user business processes necessary to match the processes provided in the COTS packages

The plug-in allows various levels of formality depending on the acquiring organization's needs. For instance, it provides the flexibility to decide whether or not to use some elements that are mandatory by law in some industries (for example, Request for Information and Request for Proposal). The plug-in is based on the Evolutionary Process for Integrating COTS-based systems (EPIC) methodology developed by Carnegie Mellon University - Software Engineering Institute (CMU-SEI).
