 | 08 Jul 2008 Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is a key enabler for streamlining a team's ability to produce a release of software. These packages provide a solution for ensuring ALM best practices in your existing IBM® Rational® ClearQuest® 7.0.1 change management system.
System requirements
You must have IBM® Rational® ClearQuest 7.0.1 to apply these ALM Packages to a schema.
These Rational ClearQuest 7.0.1 ALM Packages were created using the ClearQuest 7.0.1 Designer.
Purpose
The application lifecycle management (ALM) packages provide a solution for ensuring ALM best practices in your existing Rational® ClearQuest® 7.0.1 change management system. Application Lifecycle Management is a key enabler for streamlining a team's ability to produce a release of software. It involves the coordination of software development activities and assets to produce and manage software applications throughout their life cycle.
The ClearQuest ALM packages provide you with a role-based process and security model that offers optimal performance with a collection of tightly integrated record types that create a foundation for managing software development projects. Some of the features include:
- Projects provide a secure and role-based context for completing work
- Project tasks and activities are traceable to the originating request
- Baseline and build records provide a traceability link between development and testing
- Adaptive workflow with process enactment helps govern work according to predefined processes on a project-by-project basis
- Multisite and UCM enabled, but not required
- Queries and reports that assure completion and quality
The benefits of this package are:
- Scalable ALM model from small teams to enterprise programs and projects
- Empower project teams to define their own vocabulary and processes without impacting the schema
- Emphasis is placed on "configuring" the solution rather than designing from the ground up
- Support team members that may be distributed in multiple geographic locations
The ALM packages support the five success factors of ALM:
- Governance - Continuously assess progress and results
- Traceability - Manage dependencies and impact
- Collaboration - Connect stakeholders and contributors
- Automation - Improve performance, compliance, and quality
- Distribution - Connect the software delivery chain regardless of geographic locations
The solution can be applied to new or existing ClearQuest 7.0.1 schemas and will be included in ClearQuest 7.1. A sample database and three tutorials are included in this download. In addition, the ClearQuest ALMProject and ALMWork packages are described in a series of articles in the The Rational Edge e-zine (see Resources, below).

This section describes how to install and register the ALM Packages.
- Extract the contents of the CQ_ALM_Packages zip file into
\Program Files\Rational\ClearQuest\Packages.
- From a Command Prompt register the ALMProject and ALMWork 1.0 packages:
-
packageutil registerpackage ALMProject 1.0 "C:\Program Files\Rational\ClearQuest\packages\ALMProject\1.0"
-
packageutil registerpackage ALMWork 1.0 "C:\Program Files\Rational\ClearQuest\packages\ALMWork\1.0"
The ALMProject and ALMWork packages are now ready to be used by the ClearQuest Designer.
CQ_ALM_Example.zip:
This section describes how to install the ALM Documentation and Example Database.
- Extract the contents of the CQ_ALM_Example zip file into a directory of your choice.
- The DB/ClearQuest_storage.zip must be unzipped to the C: drive and contains the ALM schema in an Access database:
C:\ClearQuest_Storage\CQDB.
- Open and follow the ReadMe.txt file.
- In the ClearQuest Maintenance tool, create a connection to the
CQALM.mdb database.
- Login to the sample database as "admin" with no password.
- Read and follow Lab1, Lab2, and Lab3.
- Read the ClearQuest ALM documentation file: com.ibm.rational.clearquest.alm.doc.pdf
