IBM RUP for Service-Oriented Modeling and Architecture V2.4

Summary:  This Service-Oriented Modeling and Architecture (SOMA) plug-in set builds on top of Rational Unified Process (RUP) for Large Projects (Classic), adding guidance for the Business-Process Analyst, Business Architect, Business Designer, Software Architect and Designer in developing Service-Oriented Solutions. This update is based upon the version 2.0 RUP plug-in for SOA but has been extensively enhanced to incorporate content from the Service-Oriented Modeling and Architecture method developed by IBM Global Business Services.

Note that this download contains updates to two plug-ins supplied with the standard Rational Unified Process library – Business Modeling and Service-Oriented Architecture (these appear as rup_bm and rup_soa_plugin in the Rational Method Composer library). These plug-ins will be overwritten by the import of this download and any local changes to them will be lost.

System requirements

You must have Rational Method Composer V7.1 installed to use this plug-in.

Purpose

This is the third update to the Rational Unified Process (RUP) focused upon Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). This update represents a major milestone in the RUP guidance around SOA as it provides a unified method combining previous RUP for SOA content with content from the IBM Global Business Services (GBS) Service-Oriented Modeling and Architecture (SOMA) method. The SOMA method has been successfully used by IBM in a number of client engagements, and while it was initially developed leveraging the existing IBM Global Services Method (GS Method), it was felt that in the area of SOA both IBM and our customers would benefit more from a unified method approach than having two separate methods.

When looking at the two methods it is clear that the authors had very similar aims in mind and structured the methods in similar ways, and some terminology alignment has already occurred. At that time it was noted that a generic framework could be extracted that would be able to describe both methods. This plug-in set represents that next step in conceptual alignment, to serve the needs of both SOMA and RUP practitioners, and offer these extended capabilities to our customers.

Dependencies

These plug-ins depend on the RUP plug-in.

RUP Base version

Rational Unified Process V7.0.1. Before these plug-ins are imported, the Rational Method Composer library must be upgraded to Rational Method Composer 7.1 format. Rational Method Composer 7.1 will do this automatically when it opens a Rational Method Composer 7.0 format library.
