CVS is the standard freeware versioning tool. Full documentation & etc
is available at cvshome.org. It goes without saying that Clearcase is
far more flexible and powerful, but many people run projects on CVS.
If you look through the cciug archives you'll find comparisons of CVS
and Clearcase.
