Could what be something obvious? Why the 2.4.3 module doesn't work, or
why the package won't unpack?

Well, in either case, the answer is "no" :).

The kernel-source RPM is the entire, complete kernel source tree. No
other packages are needed to build the kernel (well obviously you need
the compiler etc. :).

The kernel-headers package gives you the /usr/include/linux
subdirectory; I'm missing the /usr/src/linux-2.4.2/include subdirectory.
