RE: [cciug] Avoiding using Local NT Shares

I can't quite agree with that.

The following is my experience with dynamic views. We don't use snapshot
views.

You can have views basically on any box, provided it has ClearCase
installed.
You can access those views from any CC client that has access to the file
system that hosts the views (one caveat: you can't access NT views from a ux
system, but you can access ux views from a NT system).

You can host your views on a central NT server or your UX server. If you use
the UX server for either views or vobs, you will need an interop solution
(TAS, Samba, ....).

The only caveat with this scenario is performance and network load. This is
why some people have views locally on developers PCs.

Use ClearCase LT. That is the only way to do it. The reason why NT views
under normal CleaseCase need to be on a share is that the ClearCase server
needs to be able to have access to the machine. Even with snapshot views
because of the way the ClearCase snapshot views in normal ClearCase (i.e.
there is still a View server process running) you still need a local share.

I checked out ClearCase LT and they seemed to make the whole thing a more
static process for the snapshot views. (i.e. no View server process)

Subject: [cciug] Avoiding using Local NT Shares

Hi Folks

I have been asked to investigate how we can use CC (NT
CLients/Unix Server) without using local shares on the
developers PCs.

I am sure people must have done this.

Q1) Can people share solutions to the above.
Note: I need solution for snapshot + dynamic views.

Other Related Questions

Q) Can someone explain why this share is needed ie
opposed to just a standard directory.

Most Appreciated
John
