This list is supported by Rational Software to make it easy for ClearCase
users to communicate with one another about ClearCase: questions, answers,
technical tips, new ideas and other issues.
Following is some general information about the CCIUG list and other

Q: What are some other good sources of information on ClearCase?
A: Please see the ClearCase customer web site at
http://clearcase.rational.com. In particular, see the ClearCase FAQ at
http://clearcase.rational.com/faqs and the archives of the CCIUG list at
http://clearcase.rational.com/cciug_archive.
For patches to ClearCase and related products, see
http://clearcase.rational.com/patchlink.
You must register to use the ClearCase customer web site.
Q: How do I register for the ClearCase customer web site?
You can register yourself on the site at
http://clearcase.rational.com. You will need your host-id and license
string to register, as the site is limited to ClearCase customers. Simply
go to the site and use the host-id as your username and the license string
as your password. We recommend that you enter these via cut-and-paste
rather than typing them directly. Once you have entered the site, you can
go to http://clearcase.rational.com/authentication2.html to apply for a
more easy-to-remember username/password combination. We recommend that you
apply for this alternate user name and password if you work on multiple
ClearCase sites.
Q: Is it okay to send mail to CCIUG and to Rational support at the same time?
A: Please do not copy Rational Support on CCIUG messages. Each item of
mail sent to support@rational.com (or other support addresses) generates a
request to open a new support case. Please keep your correspondence with
Rational Support separate from your CCIUG mail.
Q: Who is on the list? Who can send to the list?
A: Membership in the list is restricted to people who are actively working
with or involved in ClearCase, but anyone can send mail to the list. This
allows ClearCase users who are on aliases or burst lists or otherwise not
directly subscribed to post to CCIUG.
Q: What can I send to the list?
A: You may send any question or comment on ClearCase or configuration
management. For specific questions, you should include your version of
ClearCase and what platforms you are running on. Quotations from error
messages or logs are also helpful for others on the list who might have
answers to your questions.
Q: Is the list censored?
A: Rational Software does not censor the list or pre-approve
submissions. We do use filters and other tools to catch spam, viruses, and
other mail not welcome on the list, but this process does not result in
automatic deletion. All mail caught in this way is examined and anything
that would be acceptable for the list is immediately sent along.
Q: Then why did I get spam on the list?
A: Some unwelcome mail does get through. We change our filters regularly
to deal with new spamming methods. Rather than raising the issue of spam
on the list, please send comments and concerns to owner-cciug@rational.com
and we will handle it. Please do not reply to any such mail. It just
encourages them.
Q: What about mail from headhunters or contractors on CCIUG?
A: We welcome solicitations for configuration-management jobs from
employment agencies and potential employers. Please include location in
such postings.
We greatly value contributions from independent consulting and training
organizations that specialize in Rational ClearCase and other Rational
products.
We do not want to distribute other commercial mail on the list, however.
Q: There's so much traffic on CCIUG. How do I filter it?
A: We like heavy traffic on CCIUG. Posters can make it easier for their
fellow subscribers if they give explicit subjects to their mail and avoid
subject lines like "newbie problem" or "Help!". We also suggest list
members start inventing conventions for prefixes on subject lines such as
[UCM] for Unified Change Management, [MS] for MultiSite, [Make] for
make-related questions, [ERR] for error messages, etc. This will make it
easier for subscribers to create mail filters. As these conventions
develop, we will add them to this greeting and FAQ letter.
Q: Are there other sources of ClearCase information?
A: There are several web sites run by ClearCase consultants and users, as
well as some general configuration-management web sites. We would welcome
a regular mailing from someone on CCIUG detailing these other web sites,
but Rational Software does not maintain such a list.
Q: Can I quote the ClearCase documentation in mail to CCIUG? Can I quote
the ClearCase documentation in internal documents or web sites?
A: You are welcome to quote the ClearCase documentation in the course of
doing your work or using ClearCase, including mail to CCIUG. You are also
welcome to use the HTML and PostScript versions of the documentation as you
please within a licensed ClearCase site. Please do not post the
documentation on a public web site or make copies for unlicensed uses.
Q: What platforms are supported by which releases?
A: See the list of announced ClearCase releases at
http://clearcase.rational.com/relnotes/releases.html.
Q: Does Rational Software monitor CCIUG?
A: Many people from the ClearCase development organization, Rational
support and sales read the list. There are also many ClearCase users
within the company who subscribe. No one who works on ClearCase is
required to reply to messages on the list, but many do, either to the
sender directly or to the whole list. Rational employees writing to the
list should keep in mind that they are speaking for the company.
We suggest that Rational employees not directly involved with ClearCase use
internal mail to ask ClearCase questions, and not CCIUG.
Q: I have a question you didn't answer.
A: Please send mail to owner-cciug@rational.com. If the question is of
general interest, please send it to cciug@rational.com.
