You're right Ted. But this is so that people can work offline ... I wasn't
really clear in my original message, I should of said "view server storage",
the actual view storage will be on the local machine.

Permit me to chime in here with a comment, since it seems important to the issue of performance with respect to snapshot views. The raison d'etre for snapshot views was and is to replicate the behavior of local disk storage during a build. If the storage for a snapshot view is placed on a server rather than on the ClearCase client host then the network bandwidth becomes a factor not only in updating the snapshot view, but in accessing the snapshot view for build or other operations. Granted the view_server isn't involved except during an update, but unless you have a large bandwidth network (e.g., 100 Mbps or faster) you might as well use dynamic views. Just a suggestion for consideration. This supplements Dale's comments -- no conflict.

Right, the view_server is idle except when the user is performing a clearcase operation. The storage requirement are minimal since there are no view private files kept in the view stg dir.

If both the clients and this new "view server host" are running v4.1 you can store the view storage directories on a heterogeneous server type. On the server you need to advertize a "view" Server Storage Location with "no global path" in the clients region(s).
E.g., $ ct mkstgloc -view -ngpath -region <clients-region> <stgloc-name> <view-stgloc-pname>
"heterogeneous" v4.1 clients can then use this stgloc when creating snapshot views.
Refer to the section "Configuring ClearCase in a UNIX/Windows Network" in the "Administering ClearCase" document for general configuration issues (such as "Managng User Accounts" aka "credentials mapping"). If you already have Windows clients accessing UNIX VOBs you've already done all of the required setup.
