Most of the time, the two will match, but not always. You will also get
all the other changes to the directory, something you probably don't
want.
Adding a link gives you exactly what you claim to want by attempting to
create the file.
(Adding a link is the primitive directory editing operation. A merge will
do the same thing. Every time you create an element, you are adding a link
to that element, so there's nothing "magic" about links)
