Hi Claudia,
"SCC" is an acronym for (surprise!) "source code control". The SCC API is a
poorly published interface specification, defined by Microsoft, that defines
hooks for a number of common source control operations. An application
(typically an "integrated" development environment of any kind) can provide
source control functions without implementing the functions itself. If an
SCC compliant code control system (a so called SCC provider) is installed,
the application dispatches code control operations to the source control
tool.
Only one SCC provider shall be installed at the same time in your windows
system.
SCC is useful to support the notion of one common code control system for a
variety of applications.
ClearCase is SCC compliant. As is PVCS, VSS, Continuus, MKS SI and probably
a number of others.
>From what I know about SCC, it is a poorly specified API. Microsoft never
made it publicly available. The quality of SCC implementations by SCC
providers is reportedly varies considerably. If an application claims to be
SCC compliant, it does not mean it will interoperate reliably with any SCC
provider. You still need to verify point-to-point interoperation quality.
Cheers, Axel.
