Does anyone have any better information (success) concerning Edify Compilers
and the use of ClearCase source control in an NT4.0 & UNIX environment?
The following is a reply from Edify Corporation, www.edify.com
A wholly owned subsidiary of S1 Corporation, www.s1.com.
All Edify related files are considered source, however, they are all
binaries. They should not be "checked-in" to any system unless they are
treated as binary files and kept intact. Most version control systems, like
PVCS and Visual Source Safe, insert comments and special "control"
characters which are ignored by the compiler used. This is not good for the
EWF related files. There is no way to rebuild or reconstruct an EWF binary
to revert back to a previous release unless you choose to restore the old
version of a backed up file. There is no way to "WinDiff" two files to look
for differences between versions.
That said, you can get the same or better results backing up EWF files,
using the Backup and Restore features in EWF, to floppy or secure network
hard disk space.
As for configuration settings: These can be exported from the EWF
Configuration tool and saved as binaries as well.
There is no way in install the configuration files from command line, as far
as I know. Command line builds outside EWF servers are not possible. There
are features within EWF to make this process very managable, however, you
introduce lots of potential risk by trying to build a file outside the EWF
environment and expect it to work later. The DCOM properties on each EWF
object may get corrupted if "compiles" or "builds" occur outside of the EWF
system environment.
Hopefully you don't view my comments as "negative", however, Edify is a 4th
GL GUI environment and does not require the strict "source code management
tools" common to VB or VC++ or Java development environments. The provided
features are there to make life easier, not harder.
Edify Engineering may have other suggestions, however, they are the guys who
built the other features.
