[cciug] What is the difference between Solaris Sparc and Solaris Intel?

Hi,

A couple weeks ago I got my Tier I shipment of ClearCase 4.0. I noticed the
cdroms qualfied the Solaris OS as "Solaris
Sparc". I've read the 4.0 announcements, and noticed that the Tier II
shipment includes support for "Solaris Intel". I've
also been told that "Solaris Intel" support is NEW for ClearCase.

Since the majority of UNIX systems are my site are Digial Alpha's running
DEC UNIX 4.0D+, I haven't had much exposure
to ClearCase on Sun platforms other than the small handful of Sun 5.x.x
machines here that so run ClearCase too. I think
these are all Sparcs, but thats because they have "Sparc" in the platform
names on the cpu's. So I'm wondering,
What is a "Solaris Intel" box? Are these new machines? What are they
called, if no "Sparc XX"? Do they have
"Intel inside" stickers on the outside? Are they 64-bit instead of 32?

What would the platform type of the Intel bits? I would guess its not
"sun5".

I'm asking, because once Tier II is released, we'll upgrade all our
ClearCase systems to 4.0, and I want to be sure I
don't accidently load Sparc bits on any Intel systems someone might have
purchased in the meantime.

Thanks,
