There's no performance problem with Solaris 7 per se; in fact we use it
quite successfully. There's a (presumed, not measured by me) cost to
running any 64-bit OS, in that some data types are liable to be twice as
big and larger structures are allocated (which is how select() gets to have
a bigger bit vector in the first place). Thus executables are bigger and
use more memory. This isn't a big deal and in the long term it's one of the
inevitable tradeoffs of progress but in the short term I suspect you'll
find the 32-bit build of Solaris 7 is a little faster and has a smaller
footprint than the 64-bit. That's all I meant. The benefits of 64 may
outweigh this or they may not; I haven't been there yet and YMWV anyway.
