Re: [cciug] A week running import of cvs data and still not done??

When I imported CVS trees, the length of the import depended on
how many elements were being imported and how big each element's
history was. A tree with a few hundred files would take 3 or 4
hours. The one with over 20,000 elements did take a week.

When I did these imports, I copied the CVS tree over to a disk that
was local to the VOB server, in order to speed things up, and
ran the import directly on the VOB server machine.

| cciug folks,
|
| I am a newbie at ClearCase and CM. I checked the archives but didn't find
| an answer...
|
| The question is: Is this expected behavior and/or Is there a better
| faster way?
|
| Now explanation. We are trying to do some prototyping of moving and
| setting up for
| use some CVS data into a ClearCase. The data we got was 150Mb (tarred).
| 12K files in
| 2K directories.
|
| We have not gone to ClearCase 4.0 yet, we are still on 3.2.1 so we knew
| that we wouldn't
| get everything exactly correct using the RCS export but thought it would be
| good enough for
| our current needs. The export went pretty quickly... generated a CVT_DATA
| file of 3.5Mb.
|
| Definitely LOTs of files. The SUN Sparc system we are using to do the
| import is dedicated to
| just us. No other users.
|
| The Bad news: the Import is still chugging away a week later. The good
| news: the system is
| letting us chug this long without failing. I know that there were a lot of
| files and that the branch
| labeling is not working correctly, But, doesn't this seem like a lOOOOOOONG
| time??
|
| How have some of you folks moved Large Sets of source code that have been
| around awhile
| into ClearCase?
|
| Something just doesn't seem right. Do I really need to plan on the real
| switch over taking that kind
| of time? (remember it's still going...) Is Multiple VOBs the only way to
| shorten the time??
|
| Thank you for any and all suggestions,
|
