pro: usually no gateway problems
you can make a receipt handler (vacation) that imports received packets automagically easily.
con: packets are large (yes, i have seen packets uncompressed several 100 MB).
so compression is a must (try bzip2; 20-30% smaller than the gzip used in the rational scripts)
email will expand these large packets to 1.4 times the original size (because it must represent any
bitpatterns as text) modern mailers hide that encoding (uuencode, mime,...) but it is there.
compromise: ftp the packet and mail a information that packets arrived, so they can be imported.
fedex (ups, ....) and CD is also an option.

... no, not real, I think multisite is designed to have a connected
"line" between your different sites ... of course, if the line is broken
it's also no problem to generate the pack in ../ms_ship/outgoing, get them
from there and "ship" them via e-mail, ftp ... or tape (?), copy them in
on
the other site on ../ms_ship/incoming and start multisite syncreplica
-import ..
this works as well as on a an online-system-connect
