Re: [cciug] MultiSite shipping packets

Hi Rachel,

I have written a set of scripts to do just this automatically between two
organizations, and found it to work quite straightforwardly.

It takes a bit more coordination to get it set up, and you need to have
good communication with your opposite number at the other site/organization
to help sort out any problems that might come from lost mail.

But, as long as email delivery between the two sites is reliable, and can
cope with the maximum size of replica packet that you are going to send
then there shouldn't be a problem.

Here's how it works:

The send script creates the packet file (with a unique name which includes
the date it was created), encrypts it in an agreed key, uuencodes it,
compresses it and mails it on to the mail address of an account at the
other site specifically set up for this purpose, the mail has a subject
header which identifies it as a sync-packet.

The .forward file of the special account at the other site pipes the mail
messages to a receive script, which, process the header of the mail to make
sure it is a sync-packet, then processes the body of the mail,
uncompressing, uudecoding it, decrypting it with the agreed key, and then
placing it in a multisite storage bay.

A third script is run regulary to import into each VOB the relevant
sync-packets in the shipping bay.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Brian
